Technology Goes Beyond Just Guest Temperature Reading

Temperature is but one of the measurements for determining whether a guest or employee is ill with COVID-19. That is why it should not be relied on entirely for any diagnosis. In looking for technology that tells you more than temperature, you may want to check out a company called binah.ai LTD. Its contactless app technology enables the extraction of a large set of vital signs and mental stress measurements based on the analysis of a video taken with any device equipped with a camera (smartphone, tablet, kiosk, in-car camera and many more). Binah.ai’s solution applies a unique mix of signal processing and AI technologies, combined with a proprietary mathematical back-end processor that analyzes the video taken from the upper cheek skin region of a human face (no video of the eyes is required). Using the extracted PPG (photoplethysmogram) signal, Binah.ai’s technology is able to further calculate Heart Rate, Oxygen Saturation (SpO2) and Respiration Rate. Heart Rate Variability (HRV) is calculated based on Heart Rate data, and further serves as the data upon which Mental Stress measurements are extracted.

You may have experienced a bit of the type of technology used by Binah.ai before. According to the company, Remote Photoplethysmography (rPPG) is a simple, low-cost, and non-invasive optical technique that can be used to detect blood volume changes in a microvascular bed of tissue at the skin surface.  It is widely used in smart watches and is easily recognized as the “green light” at the back of the watch.

Of course, if you implement this system you will need to know what is “abnormal” when it comes to heart rate, oxygen saturation, etc. And, in using a sophisticated system like this, you don’t want to put your employees in the position of really playing doctor. Still, this is a very “cool” technology.
