GARDEN GROVE, CALIF.—Sterling Sleep Systems’ modular mattress system will be part of the winning Sustainable Suite that will be on display at Hospitality Design Expo 2010. The mattress system was included in the winning Sustainable Suite Design Competition entry by WATG, a destination design firm. WATG led the creative design and specification process, in conjunction with IDEO, an innovation and design firm which brought expertise on human-centered sustainability.

The U.S. Green Building Council, in conjunction with the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and NEWH, organized the Sustainable Suite Design Competition—a competition for interior designers to showcase the best hospitality design strategies that boast environmental responsibility while enhancing the guest experience.

Design submissions were judged on three overarching categories: Design Elements (water efficiency, energy and atmosphere, materials and resources and indoor environmental quality), Education (guestroom attributes and guest practices) and Overall Design (integrated design approach, originality and innovation, general aesthetic and financial feasibility).

Sterling Sleep Systems’ modular mattress system saves money by allowing one to replace any of the interchangeable parts like zippered pillow tops and other components instead of replacing the entire bed. Their environmentally friendly system reduces waste while extending mattress life. Hotel projects that include Sterling mattresses can earn LEED credit for using sustainable furniture.
