Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association’s November Event Has Green Focus

COLUMBUS, OHIO—The Ohio Hotel & Lodging Association’s Annual Conference & Gala will have a green focus this year. The event, to be held November 19 at the Hilton Columbus at Easton, will feature sessions including “The Business Case for Environmental Sustainability in the Hospitality Industry,” “The Path to Solid Waste Reduction,” “Movement to Ban Trans Fats: How Concerned Should the Hospitality Industry Be?” and “Is Your Laundry Green?” In addition, an executive panel and B&B roundtable will focus on environmental issues.

Chris Lane, v.p. of environmental affairs for Xanterra Parks & Resorts, will lead “The Business Case for Environmental Sustainability in the Hospitality Industry” session. As an executive with Xanterra, he not only oversees the company’s environmental efforts but also contributes to marketing, budgeting and new business development decisions. Lane will focus on best practices in operations and sustainability.

John Remy, director of communications, Solid Waste Authority of Central Ohio (SWACO), will lead “The Path to Solid Waste Reduction” session. Remy is the spokesperson for SWACO on recycling and all other waste reduction programs. Attendees will learn how to work with a solid waste facility to recycle more and reduce solid waste volume.

Focus on Trans Fat Elimination Trend

Annette Graham and Diana Manchester, both instructors at Ohio University, will lead the “Movement to Ban Trans Fats: How Concerned Should the Hospitality Industry Be?” session. The two speakers will explore the reasons why health activists are working to ban trans fats from commercial kitchens.

The Executive Green Panel session will focus on environmental practices and include forecasts from panelists including: Glenn Hasek, publisher and editor of Green Lodging News; Chris Lane, v.p. of environmental affairs for Xanterra Parks & Resorts; Robert Steele, chairman of the American Hotel & Lodging Assn.; and Dan West, chief of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. The panel will be moderated by Ed Watkins, editor of Lodging Hospitality.

Robert Steele, chairman of the American Hotel & Lodging Assn. and general manager of the Grand Hyatt Tampa Bay (Fla.) will be the luncheon keynote speaker.
