The Boutique Design New York (BDNY) and HX: The Hotel Experience trade shows wrapped up this past week at the Javits Center in New York City. While HX looked the smallest it has ever been, together with BDNY the two shows were formidable to cover. On my radar this year was what was newsy and new. Here then is what I found most interesting at this year’s shows:

The Humble Co. featured its bamboo toothbrushes, natural toothpaste and other products. The toothbrush handles are made of easily biodegradable bamboo and the bristles out of nylon, a durable material that degrades over time. Part of the proceeds from the sale of Humble products funds The Humble Smile Foundation.

Farmshelf

Farmshelf introduced its bookcase-sized farms that are powerful enough to provide pounds of fresh produce every week and small enough to fit into a restaurant. This very local approach to farming offers two to three times faster growth than traditional agriculture, zero food miles when you harvest on site, and uses 90 percent less water than traditional agriculture.

At BDNY, Naturalist Interiors announced the expansion of its signature wood and clear resin, nature based aesthetic furnishings with the launch of a hotel furniture collection. The line, Root & Repose, is a collaboration between Serkan Yapicilar, Founder of Naturalist Interiors, and hospitality designer Beth Donner, of Beth Donner Design.

Amenity Services unveiled its Green Room program that includes fully biodegradable wrapped cups and lids, made with MSI BIO-Resin. MSI BIO-Resin does not degrade above the ground, allowing the same shelf life as any traditional untreated resin without changing the integrity of the product. BIO-Resin only starts to degrade when buried in active landfills or any location where microbes live. Also introduced: compostable paper straws, stir sticks made from birchwood, and 100 percent recyclable cup sleeves and napkins.

Naturalist Interiors

JRS Amenities unveiled its expanded collection of MOSAIC in-room amenity dispensers. MOSAIC now includes three design formats: MOSAIC Classic Open System—Optimal solution for the environment—refillable and tamperproof; MOSAIC Classic Closed System—Proprietary cartridge pre-filled with a choice of over 30 approved luxury brands; and MOSAIC Slimline—ideal for locations with limited shower space.

FiberTrap, LLC featured its FiberTraps for bed bugs and other insects. Bugs are attracted by a pheromone. As soon as they step into the microfiber in the trap, the fiber’s loop structure entangles their legs, causing them to struggle and die of exhaustion.

ISP Solar was at HX offering a unique financing structure for solar installations. According to the company, if your electricity bill is approximately $8,000 per month, you can start saving from day one thanks to the solar technology and federal tax credit.

Majestic International featured its eco-friendly robe and towel program that requires less detergent, saves 20 percent in drying time and reduces water consumption by 30 percent—made in green by OEKO-TEX. They are 100 percent natural and biodegradable. The biodegradable slippers made from jute are antimicrobial and antibacterial.

Too much noise is often a complaint of guests trying to get a good night’s sleep. SNOOZ, Inc. offered its solution—the SNOOZ white noise sound machine that uses a real fan to generate peaceful white noise. The machine has 10 volume settings.

Just Goods, Inc.

Just Goods, Inc. displayed its JUST spring water sold in 100 percent recyclable cartons. The carton paper is made from trees that are responsibly harvested and certified by the Forest Stewardship Council.

APEX Steam Technologies featured its new APX1250 portable steam cleaner for hotel and restaurant applications. The company’s steam cleaners clean, sanitize and disinfect without chemicals.

Last month, as reported on Green Lodging News, Dyson launched its Airblade 9kJ hand dryer. That new HEPA-filtered model was demonstrated at the Javits Center this past week.

Indow featured its award-winning window inserts that save an average of 20 percent on energy. The inserts also reduce noise by 10 to 18.9 dBA when placed over operable single-pane windows.

Priority Bicycles displayed its latest fleet bicycles for hotel and resort usage. They are engineered to require no regular maintenance. One unique feature: The Gates Carbon Drive Belt that requires no lubrication. It replaces the bike chain.

Hawaiian Paradise Coffee

Hawaiian Paradise Coffee introduced its responsibly sourced coffees from farms in Hawaii and Sumatra, Papa New Guinea, Vietnam, Peru, and other Central American regions.

Ivresse International featured its hotel amenities and dispensers. All products manufactured by Ivresse are Oxo biodegradable.

LECHUZA displayed its planters with their own irrigations systems. The planters themselves are 100 percent recyclable.

Also at HX and BDNY, Zeftron introduced its new Encore carpet collection.
