Hotel Association of New York City Presents Sustainability Awards

NEW YORK—For the fifth year, the Hotel Association of New York City (HANYC) has presented its Sustainability Awards. The awards celebrate well known industry champions and bring attention to sustainability for people, planet and profit. Properties competed in the categories of Environmental Protection, Sustainable Community and Innovation. Competitors were selected from applicants all over New York City who have invested great care, time and finances into reducing use of energy, water, resources and waste.

This year, the award categories focused on individual champions of sustainability, spearheading eco-friendly programs and mindful practices. Winners of the awards incorporated sustainability programs at the local, national, and international level. They support the New York City environmental community, they implemented policies and standards for conservation, waste reduction, green building and purchasing practices, and environmental education and engagement. Some of the projects were designed to be sustainable from the initial building design and planning stages and some were designed to be part of a renovated and retrofitted building aiming to become LEED certified.

The sustainability champions that helped each property win this year are responsible for spearheading community commitments and were often an integral part of adapting new sustainability initiatives.  They are strong leaders, dedicated to service by donating time, knowledge, and skills.

The 2019 winners include: Environmental Protection Award, Hotel Under 250 Rooms, 1 Hotel Central Park; Sustainable Community Award, Hotel Under 250 Rooms, Hyatt Union Square; Environmental Protection Award, Hotel Over 250 Rooms, InterContinental New York Barclay; Sustainable Community Award, Hotel Over 250 Rooms, Westin NY Times Square; and Sustainable Innovation Award, Hostelling International.
