Replacing traditional bulbs with compact fluorescents (CFLs) can result in substantial financial savings, especially in the face of rising energy costs, and helps to protect the environment. CFLs are compatible with standard sockets but use 65 percent to 75 percent less energy than traditional incandescent bulbs and last 5 to 10 times longer without sacrificing light quality. CFL bulb recycling, currently scarce and cost prohibitive, not only reduces landfill mass but is essential to prevent harmful mercury from being released into the environment.
