BOSTON—The Westin Copley Place general manager Michael Jorgensen announced that The Westin Copley Place is the first Starwood Hotel in the United States and the first hotel in Boston to join Green Hotels Global, an environmental program that requires hotels to disclose their carbon footprint, energy consumption, water usage and waste generation associated with room-night usage and event bookings.

“We are proud to carry the torch for the Green Hotels Global program for Starwood in the United States,” said Jorgensen. “We have made great strides in reducing the hotel’s overall carbon footprint over the past four years. We are committed, as a hotel, to doing our part to reduce the impact we have on the environment.”

Since 2008, The Westin Copley Place, built in 1983, has greatly reduced its carbon footprint—reducing electricity usage by 13 percent, reducing gas consumption by 19 percent, cutting steam usage by a third, saving more than 25 million gallons of water, and recycling 130 tons of trash annually.

Metrics Calculated Monthly

Green Hotels Global has provided the hotel with a customized tool that calculates accurate environmental metrics on a monthly basis, so that The Westin Copley Place can take actions to improve their energy usage, carbon emissions, water usage and waste diversion.

“Using Green Hotels Global, we are certain that we can have a real and measurable effect on our environmental impact,” said James Gelfand, The Westin Copley Place director of sales and marketing. “We think our customers will appreciate our commitment to being green and our leadership in independent measurement and disclosure of our environmental footprint.”

Green Hotels Global provides companies with an independent source for accurate metrics to calculate the environmental impact of their travel and meetings, providing standard metrics to compare a property’s environmental performance.
