Launching a new publication is not an easy task, especially when you do it on your own and without the support of a corporation behind you. To create a successful publication, you need talented designers and writers and a network of vendors willing to purchase display ads, directory listings and sponsorships. It has been eight months since I launched Green Lodging News and I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of those individuals who have supported my venture with their advertising dollars and article contributions. Green Lodging News would not exist without your help. So, thank you!

I am confident that Green Lodging News will continue to grow. The Green Lodging News newsletter now has 5,400 subscribers and the website should generate about 30,000 page views this month. That is up from 12,000 page views in August, the first full month of publication. Vendors who have not yet taken the step to advertise in Green Lodging News should know that the Green Lodging News website is generating more traffic than some well-known industry publication sites that have been around for years. And, we are just getting started. Here are a few ways you can help Green Lodging News continue to grow.

1. Include Green Lodging News in your advertising plans for the remainder of 2007 and for 2008. A Founding Sponsorship is your best value (click here for details.) Even if you have already allocated your marketing dollars for this year, at least consider the purchase of a Green Product Directory listing (just $200/year) to gain a presence on the Green Lodging News website.
2. Continue to send press releases about your company’s environmental news and new products.
3. Write a guest column for the website and newsletter (click here for details).
4. Call or e-mail me with your article suggestions.

I am excited about the future of this publication and look forward to meeting many of you in the months ahead.

Earth Day Activities

In last week’s column, I listed some of the activities properties are planning for Earth Day. I heard from two additional properties last week. At the Black Bear Lodge in Germain, Wisc., there are plans to run an Earth Day Internet special. The first guest to call and mention the special will receive five tree seedlings from Trees for Tomorrow, a specialty school in Eagle River, Wisc., that is devoted to environmental education and awareness. Subsequent callers will receive one seedling. The resort will pick up the cost of shipping the seedlings.

The Airlie Conference Center in Warrenton, Va., is planning many activities for its employees and guests during Earth Week leading up to Earth Day on April 21. The first Earth Day was observed in April of 1970 and Airlie has been celebrating this event ever since. To begin Earth Week at Airlie, the Earth Day flag will be raised during a ceremony at the entrance to Airlie House. Some of the activities being planned for Earth Week include: environmental tours of the Airlie property; trash pick-up crews; a tree identification tour with a local arborist; and participation in Airlie’s Local Food Project garden. Other activities include encouraging employees to carpool to work and to purchase low-wattage bulbs and recycled paper products.

Airlie Center was awarded the Green Seal designation in 2004, and E3 status through the Department of Environmental Quality Virginia Environmental Excellence Program in 2004.

As always, I can be reached at editor@greenlodgingnews.com, or by calling (440) 243-2055. I look forward to hearing from you.
