Steam Cleaners Make Chemical-Free Cleaning Much More Possible

Glenn Hasek

As a supplement to your green cleaning arsenal, I strongly recommend the use of steam cleaners for cleaning and disinfecting. I spoke with executives at two steam cleaner companies recently and they filled me in on the many applications and benefits of steam cleaning. Watch for my article on Green Lodging News in the next few days.

Steam cleaning is a rare event in hotels these days. One of the executives I spoke with estimates that only about 2 percent of hotels use steam cleaners. It is a missed opportunity to clean very effectively with very little water and no chemicals. Those properties that do use them for guestrooms use them only on occasion—every 30 days, for example—for a deep cleaning. I was told, however, that steam cleaners can be used every day in guestroom housekeeping without adding extra time to a room’s turnaround.

No chemical company is going to turn you on to steam cleaning. They want you hooked on chemicals—whether traditional or green products. Some of those chemicals will persist where they are used, ultimately becoming a hazard for both guests and employees. Steam cleaning of chemical-holding surfaces—carpeting, furniture, etc.—can remove those chemicals.

Many Applications

Steam cleaners can be used for the cleaning and sanitizing of mattresses, carpeting, drapery, furniture, tile, grout, all bathroom surfaces, HVAC systems, walk-ins, shelving, cutting boards, freezers, room service carts, public restrooms, hard-to-reach areas, hood filters, and for removing gum from carpeting or concrete. As mentioned previously on Green Lodging News, steam can also be used to kill bedbugs, their eggs, as well as dust mites. Along with mattress encasements, steam cleaning can help extend the life of mattresses.

A gallon of water can last hours in a steam cleaner. With continuous flow machines, there is no down time. Dry vapor of close to 300 degrees does the cleaning and sanitizing work. Mold and mildew are killed instantly. There is no lingering scent.

Wellness is top of mind these days, but it has always been your responsibility to provide your guests and employees with the healthiest environment possible. Take the time to investigate steam cleaning. It will be healthy for your bottom line as well.
