LAGUNA BEACH, CALIF.—Soul Community Planet (SCP) announced a new partnership with the Boardriders Foundation and SeaTrees as part of its Every Stay Does Good program. Through Every Stay Does Good, SCP’s guests help to make the world a better place through special programs that advance the values of wellness, social good and sustainability. With the announcement, SCP will plant one SeaTree—or kelp—each time a guest stays at the SCP Seven4One Hotel or the Laguna Riviera Hotel. The program will help restore the marine ecosystem along the Southern California Coast and foster positive climate change.

“We are honored to partner with Boardriders Foundation and SeaTrees—two forward thinking organizations that understand the ocean holds the key to reversing climate change. This partnership taps into SCP’s growing conscious community,” said Soul Community Planet Founder and CEO Ken Cruse. “Through this program, our guests join the Southern California surfing community in helping to restore kelp forests and improve the wellness of our ocean, which in turn will help improve the health of our planet.”

Carbon stored in coastal and marine ecosystems is known as “Blue Carbon.” Kelp can sequester an estimated 20 times more carbon dioxide per acre than terrestrial forests, making it not only an important foundation for biodiverse marine habitats, but also a powerful force in storing persistent greenhouse gas and mitigating the effects of climate change.

Surf Company Shows Leadership

“We believe surfers should be leaders in protecting the ocean ecosystems in which they surf. The support from Boardriders is a commitment from the largest surf company to demonstrate that leadership unequivocally,” said Michael Stewart, co-founder of Sustainable Surf/SeaTrees.

“We are thrilled to support the ambition of SeaTrees to rapidly scale up the restoration of coastal ecosystems around the world. Surfers depend on these ecosystems being healthy, and every Boardriders surfing brand will support at least one SeaTrees project,” said Bob McKnight, Founder of Quiksilver and Director of the Boardriders Foundation.

In addition to helping restore the marine ecosystem along the Southern California coast, SCP and Boardriders intend to co-host periodic beach cleanups and other events to help care for the coastline of Laguna Beach.

Expansion of SCP’s Commitment

The announcement is an expansion of other Every Stay Does Good partnerships designed to make truly regenerative travel a reality. In 2021, SCP launched the Pristine Makai program in partnership with the Hawai’i Wildlife Fund. The program focuses on keeping the Big Island’s beaches pure and healthy by facilitating the recovery of marine debris that makes its way to Hawai’i’s southern shores from the great pacific garbage patch. To date SCP’s Pristine Makai program has facilitated the recovery of more than 31,000 pounds of trash from an ecologically sensitive beach.

“Now is the time to travel in a new way,” Cruse said. “A way that energizes our spirits rather than drains our energy. A way that leaves the communities we visit better off than they were before we came. A way that gives thanks to Mother Earth for unconditionally nurturing our bodies and souls. As a Holistic Hospitality company founded on the values of healthy, kind, and green, we’re proud to work with groups like Boardriders Foundation and SeaTrees in our joint effort to help make regenerative travel a reality.”
