LOUISVILLE, KY.—SCHOTT HomeTech announced that SCHOTT CERAN, its glass-ceramic for cooktop applications, has been validated arsenic- and antimony-free through UL Environment’s Environmental Claims Validation program.

SCHOTT CERAN glass-ceramic is the first cooktop glass-ceramic on the market made without the use of arsenic or antimony. These two harmful substances are commonly used to smooth and reduce bubbles during the conventional manufacturing process of glass-ceramic panels. By refining its manufacturing process, SCHOTT is now the only glass manufacturer to eliminate the need for either metal in glass-ceramic manufacturing. The innovations in SCHOTT’s manufacturing process have eliminated more than 180 tons of arsenic and antimony per year, reducing consumer concerns about the improper disposal and run-off from these substances.

“Our customers are asking for sustainable products to meet consumer demand and many manufacturers are responding with environmental claims, but SCHOTT is the first company to back up those claims with third-party validation,” said Karen Elder, marketing manager at SCHOTT HomeTech. “Validation from an independent and respected source like UL Environment highlights the innovations in SCHOTT’s manufacturing process, which are the result of our commitment to research and development. SCHOTT is dedicated to providing top quality, validated products to help develop a green building industry consumers can trust, as this verification shows.”

Backed by over a century of experience testing products and writing standards, UL Environment’s validation program is designed to provide purchasers with a new level of confidence in the claims made on today’s new environmentally preferable products. Using the standard EPA Method 3052, UL Environment tested for and found no trace of arsenic or antimony in SCHOTT CERAN glass-ceramic.

Passing the UL Environmental Claims Validation program allows manufacturers like SCHOTT to apply the UL Environment claims validation service label on product packaging and marketing materials. Proving SCHOTT CERAN glass-ceramic is free of arsenic and antimony not only reduces its environmental impact and reassures consumers, it also reinforces the credibility of companies that produce products with substantiated environmental claims. Validation also helps companies differentiate themselves in the increasingly crowded “green” product space.
