EDISON, NEW JERSEY—The one-piece, wall-hung Sanistar Macerating Toilet System from SFA Saniflo Inc. allows a business owner to create a new small bathroom or powder room wherever they need one, while saving both space and water. The space savings derives from the Sanistar’S Euro-contemporary design that combines a macerating pump and an electronically activated flushing mechanism into a single package. Measuring only 18 inches wide and 20.5 inches deep and with no external water tank, the self-contained wall-hung unit is ideal for tight spaces where installation space is at a premium.

Sanistar saves water by using only 1.1 gallons per flush, instead of the standard 1.6 gpf. In addition to disposing waste from the toilet, the macerator inside can also pump water away from a nearby hand basin. The system uses a 1-inch copper or plastic discharge pipe to pump effluent 9 feet vertically, 100 feet horizontally, or a combination of both. (Note: A vertical run of three feet is equivalent to a horizontal run of 30 feet.)

Made of vitreous china, the Sanistar works in much the same manner as Saniflo’s Saniplus unit, except that its pump and macerating unit are housed inside the fixture (rather than in a separate box for positioning behind the toilet). What follows is a step-by-step description of that flushing-macerating cycle:

• The flushing mechanism is activated with a pneumatic button atop the bowl.
• This triggers a timer and a solenoid valve, which fills and washes the sides of the bowl.

• The pump motor evacuates the bowl into the macerator, where the contents are quickly and quietly reduced, and then pumped away through the discharge line.

• The motor stops after approximately 15 seconds, and the timer programs the refill of the bowl with fresh water, readying the system for its next use.

The Sanistar can be mounted to any sturdy wall, using a wall-bracket system that is shipped with the unit. The bracket is equipped with adjustable feet, so that the unit can be positioned at the optimum height for the individual user—usually between 15 and 18 inches. On new construction, the Sanistar can be built directly into the wall and mounted against 2-inch x 6-inch studs.
