CHARLOTTE, N.C.—Most hotel electronic door lock systems utilize plastic keycards made primarily of polyvinyl chloride—also known as PVC. The vast majority of these cards eventually find their way into our landfills where they take thousands of years to degrade. Believing that this situation was environmentally unacceptable, Cadmus Whitehall Group has created a new keycard alternative known as Green-Key.

Green-Key is an environmentally friendly alternative to the traditional plastic hotel keycard. The cards are compatible with existing key lock systems but unlike plastic keycards, Green-Key cards are biodegradable and produced from paperboard, a renewable resource. In addition, the new cards are easily recycled. The paperboard construction also makes it an economical choice versus other high priced eco-friendly PVC card alternatives.

Cadmus developed Green-Key to address environmental issues including the damaging effects PVC production and disposal can have on the environment. Cadmus found no need for keycards to be made of indestructible PVC plastic when most guests treat their keycards as a disposable item.

“We have already had a great response to Green-Key from various hotels that want to distinguish their property as an innovator and environmental leader,” says Wade Bryant, technical services manager for Cadmus Whitehall Group.

The Boulder Outlook Hotel & Suites in Colorado recently switched from traditional PVC plastic hotel keycards to Green-Key paperboard keycards.
