World Oceans Month is a month-long global celebration held every June to highlight the vital role the ocean plays in sustaining life on Earth, regulating the climate, and producing oxygen. The month is anchored by the globally recognized World Oceans Day on June 8.
OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels is marking World Ocean Month with its largest coordinated conservation initiative to date across Hawaii, Fiji, Thailand, Mauritius and the Maldives while also releasing its inaugural Sustainability Report.
Through its global conservation platform, OUTRIGGER Zone, the company will activate more than 40 ocean-focused programs throughout June involving guests, hosts, marine scientists and local communities.
Some examples of OUTRIGGER World Ocean Month activities: beach cleanups, art workshop, sailing aboard a wa‘a (Hawaiian sailing canoe), stargazing, coral planting, recycling training, and seagrass planting. Across Thailand, World Ocean Month programming includes the planting of 3,000 mangrove trees, 24,000 seagrass plants and the release of 10,000 prawns to restore native marine populations.
Reflects Relationships Built with Marine Scientists & Others
“The ocean doesn’t recognize borders and neither does our commitment to protecting it,” said Sean Dee, Executive Vice President & Chief Commercial Officer for OUTRIGGER Resorts & Hotels. “World Ocean Month reflects the relationships we have built with marine scientists, Indigenous cultural practitioners, students and fishing communities across every destination where we operate. The Sustainability Report is our public accountability for that work.”
The report documents meaningful operational progress: 100 percent of hosts completed human trafficking awareness training in 2025; 94 percent of properties have transitioned to bulk guestroom amenities; and all properties now operate water refill stations to reduce single-use plastics.
A Finding Nemo Theme
InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort just announced its guest program for World Oceans Day. A Finding Nemo theme will inspire interactive family activities across the island. Guests can take part in the Finding Nemo Expedition, an island-wide treasure hunt designed to engage participants in marine discovery and adventure. Younger guests will also be invited to enjoy ocean-themed cookie decorating and face-painting activities throughout the day.
Families can display their creativity in the Marine Animal Sandcastle Building Competition, which also incorporates a shoreline clean-up initiative to encourage environmental stewardship. Children participating will be celebrated and receive certificates and an Ocean Protector badge in recognition of their involvement and creativity in the Marine Animal Sandcastle Competition at the Ocean Guardians Ceremony. As the day draws to a close, guests can come together for a special screening of A Turtle’s Tale: Sammy’s Adventures, before heading to the pool bar for an Ocean Quiz, testing their knowledge of marine life and ocean conservation through a fun and interactive trivia challenge.
Ocean to Table Dining Experience
InterContinental Maldives will present an exclusive Ocean to Table dining experience curated by Chef Arun at the resort’s flagship Mediterranean restaurant, The Lighthouse. The refined, ocean-inspired culinary journey will highlight responsibly sourced seafood and vibrant island flavors, thoughtfully crafted to celebrate the beauty and sustainability of the Indian Ocean.
As part of the resort’s sustainability initiatives, guests will be invited to give back to the island through a lagoon clean-up. The week will culminate with an educational interview session hosted by the Ocean Group, exploring sustainable fishing practices, and a commemorative cake-cutting ceremony with the Manta Trust, bringing guests and the resort community together in support of ocean awareness and conservation.
