National Geographic just published its list of the 20 Best New Hotels in the World. A big tip of the hat to the Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort in Fiji for taking the No. 1 spot.
At the resort, which has 25 bures (traditional thatched huts), guests can snorkel with resident marine biologists, help restore coral reefs, learn how endangered giant clams are being protected, and explore mangrove ecosystems within a marine sanctuary.
Younger travelers can also get into the spirit of discovery through the complimentary Bula Club and School Under the Sea, where the resort’s resident marine biologist and naturalists lead reef preservation activities, mangrove walks, glass-bottom boat excursions, rainforest exploration, and family snorkeling experiences.
The resort’s 25 bures have been transformed from one-bedroom retreats to two-bedroom oceanfront refuges ideal for multigenerational families. The redesign prioritized locally sourced timber and hand-crafted magimagi (woven coconut-fiber rope). Traditional lovo feasts, made with ingredients from the resort’s organic gardens and the area’s regenerative farms, help visitors understand the land and the Fijian traditions that honor it.
Sustainability is Part of Everyday Life
At Jean-Michel Cousteau Resort, sustainability is part of everyday life. From water conservation and wastewater management to recycling, composting, and low-impact tourism, practices are designed to reduce one’s environmental footprint while honoring the natural beauty of Fiji.
The organic garden supplies a meaningful portion of the produce served at the resort, supporting fresh, seasonal dining and reducing reliance on imported goods. Across the property, tropical gardens provide natural shade, support biodiversity, and create a deeper connection between guests and the island environment.
From farm-to-table dining and edible landscapes to water conservation, composting, and low-impact operations, sustainability is woven into daily life at the resort. Practices are designed to reduce the island footprint while preserving Fiji’s natural beauty for future generations.
Eco-Programmes invite guests to experience conservation firsthand, from guided marine discovery and coral restoration to mangrove planting and wildlife education. The resident marine biologists, Ofa and Johnny, bring Savusavu Bay’s marine life to life through engaging presentations and guided snorkeling expeditions.
