TEMPERANCE, MICH.—MTS, a leading manufacturer of premium seating for the hospitality industry, announced it is now able to offer to customers within the architectural and design communities the ability to earn Continuing Education Units (CEUs). Through its partnership with the GREENGUARD® Environmental Institute, MTS will conduct continuing education courses for key partners and customers at their locations or events.

The continuing education course, “Healthy Indoor Air Quality by Design,” is designed to teach participants to understand the impact of indoor air pollution on human health. Participants will also be able to identify sources of indoor air pollutants and view several case studies of the effects of controlling versus not controlling indoor environmental quality throughout all phases of building design, construction and maintenance. Moreover, the participants will learn the value of selecting certified low-emitting products as a proven method for controlling VOC emissions (volatile organic compounds) that invade the indoor environment.

“We are very pleased to be able to provide this continuing education resource to our customers and partners,” said Bart Kulish, president of MTS. “We live our SynerGreen commitment every day, and this is just one more way we can help bring sustainability issues and education to the hospitality industry in a meaningful way.”

Impact of Poor IAQ

Indoor air pollution is recognized as one of the greatest risks to public health by such organizations as the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, the American Lung Assn., and the World Health Organization. Poor indoor air quality (IAQ) can lead to allergies, asthma, reproductive and developmental problems, and cancer. The economic impact of indoor air pollution is equally alarming.

In September, MTS announced that its entire line of stack, banquet and restaurant seating has received GREENGUARD Indoor Air Quality certification for being low-emitting, a characteristic which minimizes levels of indoor pollutants. MTS is the first to pursue and receive this designation in the hospitality seating industry, providing further proof of the company’s commitment to environmental stewardship.

The “Healthy Indoor Air Quality By Design” program qualifies as 1 (Health, Safety & Welfare) HSW LU for AIA continuing education, 0.1 CEU for IDCEC continuing education (ASID/IIDA) and 1-ECH for CSI continuing education.
