LAGRANGE, GA.—All Milliken Floor Covering modular products, including those developed specifically for residential and hospitality markets, have been certified to the new preeminent green carpet standard—Sustainable Carpet Assessment Draft Standard NSF 140. Notably, all products with ESP backing meet the very stringent California Platinum Environmentally Preferable Products (EPP) certification.
“We are particularly pleased to announce that our full line of commercial and residential modular products have undergone stringent third party review to provide our customers with further assurance of our commitment to sustainable practices,” says Dave Caples, president of Milliken’s Floor Covering Division.
The carpet industry worked with a consensus organization of academia, specifiers, environmentalists and government officials to develop the Sustainable Carpet Assessment Draft Standard NSF 140 as a measure of a carpet’s impact on the environment. The State of California added requirements to the NSF 140 standard to create CA Gold.
Scientific Certification Systems (SCS) provides third party transparency in administering the process and determining points for multiple product reviews. Milliken modular and panel products with nylon fiber and cushion backing achieved the following certification ratings for the three programs:
• All Milliken modular with ES backing are certified SCS Sustainable Choice Gold/Environmentally Preferable Products.
• All Milliken modular with ESP backing are certified as SCS Sustainable Choice Platinum/Environmentally Preferable Products.
• All Milliken modular with ESP backing are certified as SCS Sustainable Choice California Platinum/Environmentally Preferable Products.
SCS is an independent certifier of environmental, sustainability, food quality and food purity claims. For more than two decades, SCS has developed internationally recognized standards and certification programs aimed at spurring the highest level of environmental improvements, social accountability and product performance.
Milliken recently received the 2006 Business Environmental Purchasing and Sustainability Award for exceptional sustainable practices from the State of Massachusetts. All Milliken Flooring products undergo Life Cycle Assessment and follow Design for the Environment protocols in producing new products and re-engineering existing offerings. All products are PVC-free (1986), chlorine-free (1990) and 100 percent recyclable.
