TROY, N.Y.—The first-of-its-kind ellumi germ-killing Recessed Shower Light—powered by Vital Vio’s proprietary VioSafe technology which safely, effectively, and continuously kills fungi and bacteria—has been launched by Evolution Lighting, and is now available.
Now, with the flip of a switch, lights can be killing germs and visibly reducing the dreadful build-up of mold in showers and bathtubs as well as other spaces.
Unlike single-purpose lights that only illuminate a room, this innovative LED multi-tasks. With the flip of a switch it goes from Standard Mode to its powerful Disinfection Mode—immediately working to inhibit the growth of mold, mildew, and bacteria such Serratia marcescens—that ugly pink growth too often found lurking on bathtubs, shower curtains and walls. Unlike ultraviolet (UV) disinfection systems where prolonged exposure is harmful, the ellumi Disinfection Mode is safe for continuous human (and pet) exposure.
Easy to install, the ellumi germ-killing Recessed Shower Light is a retrofit unit that fits into a 5” or 6” recessed can, and is rated for wet locations. It is recommended to target surfaces within 9 feet. Though ideal for the shower, this germ-killing LED solution is also effective in the entire bathroom and other spaces—wherever there is a need to disinfect and protect.
When the Disinfection Mode is on, it is working to kill germs. To maximize the benefits, it should be left on in Disinfecting Mode continuously, except when the Standard Mode is preferred to illuminate the space. If used 24 hours a day, this ellumi recessed shower light provides almost six years of service. Because ellumi uses integrated LED technology, an efficient lighting source, the energy cost of having it on and working 24/7, is under $10 per year (based on energy cost of 11 cents per kilowatt-hour).
The Science Behind ellumi
The proprietary VioSafe technology used in ellumi excites certain molecules in microorganisms through photo-activation to produce Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS), causing cell damage and death over time. Vital Vio and independent research has shown that, used in combination with traditional intermittent cleaning, VioSafe technology continuously kills bacteria, mold, and mildew on high-touch surfaces in interior environments.
Behind ellumi are two companies—Evolution Lighting, LLC, a leader in providing innovative and premium lighting experiences to the residential sector, and Vital Vio, a health tech company that has pioneered the use of VioSafe technology to curtail the spread of infections. Together, they have joined forces to create ellumi.

The Recessed Shower Light is the second addition to the ellumi germ-killing LED product line. The ellumi germ-killing Under Cabinet light, launched in March 2018, is now available in four sizes and can link up to six (6) units at a time (9”, 12”, 18”, and 24”). With the dual mount option to plug in directly to an outlet or direct-wire to a circuit, ellumi provides building owners a way to continuously disinfect and protect interior surfaces.
