SHANGHAI, CHINA—Jinjiang Inns, a leading Chinese budget hotel chain, recently introduced a range of new green hotel initiatives that aim to reduce disposable item usage, encourage recycling and reward environmental consciousness.

One major new initiative is the “6 Small Pieces” plan, which will offer six different toiletry essentials to guests in rooms. These essentials will be recycled into either plastic or aluminum alloy items after usage, rather than going to landfill.

Guests at Jinjiang Inns are also encouraged to bring their own toiletries and supplies, and are actually rewarded for doing so.

Non-traditional Approach

“We realize that our approach is definitely non-traditional for a hotel business,” said Tracey Guo, marketing manager at Jinjiang Inns. “However, the environmental problems we are facing are definitely non-traditional, and these initiatives also allow us to offer great basic facilities at far lower prices, in keeping with our Chinese budget hotel philosophy.

“We also believe that these are cyclical efforts that will be naturally self-increasing,” Guo added. “Our environmental focus will attract environmentally conscious visitors, who will be naturally thoughtful about their resource usage. We hope that this will eventually become standard practice.”

These initiatives add to Jinjiang Inns’ already solid green status, with a “four green leaf” designation from the China Hotels Assn., and active participation in Earth Hour for the past two years running.
