Search “Kimpton” on Green Lodging News—for Kimpton Hotels—and you will find a long list of articles highlighting the brand’s environmental efforts going all the way back to July 2006 when Green Lodging News was launched. I recently heard from Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia and would like to share a bit about their unique efforts.
The property, housed in the historic Art Deco Architects Building, is LEED Gold certified, reflecting a globally recognized standard for sustainability achievement. The hotel integrates eco-conscious practices across its 230 guestrooms, public spaces, and event facilities, including:
- Energy efficiency: All guestroom, corridor, and public space lighting uses LED bulbs. Guestroom HVAC units filter fresh outdoor air to create a comfortable atmosphere. Units are motion-activated, which limits unnecessary energy expenditure.
- Water conservation: Low-flow faucets, showerheads, and toilets help reduce water usage.
- Waste reduction: Every bathroom uses large, refillable shampoo, conditioner and shower gel amenities by Atelier Bloem, eliminating the disposal of small plastic bottles. Recycling bins are available in every room, and all of the packaging materials used in Square 1682, the hotel’s restaurant, are made from recycled materials and compostable. In-room recycling bins make it easy for you to reduce, reuse and then recycle.
- Sustainable sourcing: Menu items feature ingredients from nearby farms and food purveyors, reducing carbon emissions and supporting the local economy.
- Non-toxic materials: Cleaning supplies are non-toxic, and paints, sealants, and stains are low VOC to maintain a healthy indoor environment.
- Social impact: Guests can forego daily housekeeping in exchange for a $10 F&B credit and a $5 donation to Clean the World, which recycles unused soaps to create hygiene kits for communities in need. Guests earn complimentary 1 p.m. late check-out.
Kimpton Hotel Palomar Philadelphia also offers 6,000 square feet of flexible meeting and event space across the Burnham Ballroom and multiple floors, where sustainability is integrated into operations and design. The hotel’s digital bedside reading program further reduces paper waste, reflecting its commitment to minimizing environmental impact while delivering luxury experiences. Guests can also take advantage of complimentary bikes to explore Philadelphia sustainably, enjoying urban adventures while reducing their carbon footprint. Additionally, the hotel’s Plant Pals program allows guests to “adopt” a houseplant during their stay—simply request a Plant Pal at the front desk and bring a touch of green to your room.
