PORT-OF-SPAIN, TRINIDADAs one of the Caribbean’s premier meetings and leisure hotels, Hyatt Regency Trinidad (HRT) understands the importance of staying at the forefront of growing trends that are in line with the brand’s commitment to sustainable practices. With the heightened popularity of urban farming and in keeping with World of Hyatt’s “Environmental” Vision, the hotel launched its newest eco-initiative, a hydroponic garden, allowing the luxury water-front hotel to use high-quality, fresh ingredients, grown on-site, as the basis of its culinary philosophy, while minimizing the hotel’s environmental footprint.

“The launch of our hydroponic garden is a proud moment and a positive step for Hyatt Regency Trinidad to create a more sustainable environment for the hotel and our immediate community,” noted Richard Westell, General Manager of HRT. “Our long-term objective is to consistently exceed the expectations of our guests and provide the best experiences. By integrating our very own hydroponic garden, we can elevate our culinary offerings with quality ingredients and remain competitive in the everchanging hospitality industry.”

The hotel’s waterfront hydroponic garden features kale, arugula, peppermint, lemon grass, cherry tomatoes, peppers and diverse varieties of lettuce, which will supplement vegetable supplies from local farmers while eliminating the need to import produce. In addition to the hotel’s executive chefs using ingredients derived from the urban garden in their culinary ventures, the hotel’s Spa Esencia will also be launching herb and spice infused treatments for guests. In addition to the garden, the hotel has placed an emphasis on using recyclable products and implemented the end of single-use plastic products such as packaged condiments and straws.

World of Hyatt’s Vision 2020 aims to tackle the most pressing global environmental issues by reducing energy and water consumption across its hotels, as well as lowering greenhouse gas emissions at hotels, implementing recycling and waste reduction practices and creating effective supply chain sustainability.
