Heat Transfer Unveils New Line of Solar Water Heaters

EAST FREETOWN, MASS.—Heat Transfer recently unveiled the SuperStor Contender Solar, a new line of glass lined indirect water heaters, designed specifically for solar thermal applications. The new units store hot water from one or more solar collectors while also providing either electric or boiler backup for when the available solar power cannot meet hot-water demand. The units are eligible for a federal tax credit when connected to one or more solar panels.

The SuperStor Contender Solar unit contains a solar-powered, enamel heat exchanger, positioned at the bottom of its glass lined storage tank and engineered to provide maximum heat transfer from the collector fluid into water used for domestic hot water applications. The backup heat source inside the tank is available in two different series, corresponding to the type of backup heat source:

• SB Series indirect water heaters incorporate a backup heat exchanger, positioned in the upper half of the tank, for transferring heat from a boiler. A thermostat, also located in the upper portion of the tank, monitors boiler operations to maintain the preset water temperature.

• SE Series indirect water heaters incorporate an electric element to heat the water in the storage tank when its temperature dips below a preset level. Again, an integral thermostat controls the operation of this element.

In both series, the glass lining is a specially formulated enamel flow coat that guarantees 100 percent coverage of the tank with no exposed welds. The storage tank itself is enclosed in a rustproof plastic jacket, made of high-density polyethylene with two inches of non-CFC polyurethane foam insulation in between, helping to keep tank heat loss to less than a half-degree per hour. Measuring 23 inches to 27 inches wide and 46.5 inches to 71.5 tall, depending on the model, both series are available in three tank sizes: 50 gallons, 80 gallons and 119 gallons.

“These units allow a home or building owner to enjoy all the cost-saving benefits of solar water heating, while also having the security of a quality backup system that will keep the hot water running when the sun’s energy is not enough,” says Heat Transfer CEO Dave Davis.
