LA TANTE, ST. DAVID’S, GRENADA—Paradise Bay Resort, base here, is laying the foundation for an 80-kilowatt, 100-foot-high windmill. According to James Post, a representative of the resort, the wind generator is the first utility-size windmill in the Eastern Caribbean and will be able to supply the resort with almost 100 percent of its electricity needs.

The foundation for the windmill will hold 6,000 feet of steel rods and 40 tons of concrete. The propellers for the windmill will span 60 feet from tip to tip. In March, the installation will be completed under supervision of Netherlands-based Wind Energy Solutions BV. A press conference will be held on March 30 to mark the installation’s completion. At the press event, a senior executive from Wind Energy Solutions BV will be on hand to explain how interested parties can pursue wind energy.

“The primary regional wind systems in the Caribbean are the northeast trades that form a relatively stable wind—ideal for windmills,” Post says. “Because the cost of fossil fuel is very high in the islands, it is fair to state that wind energy is a natural choice in this region.”

Paradise Bay Resort is a small villa resort located in a natural area on the southeast coast of Grenada. It is located on eight beachfront acres. The resort consists of nine villas with rooms and suites, Aloe Vera Restaurant, pool and sun deck, and Frangipani Beach Bar & Grill. The resort also includes six budget rooms, two apartments and spa facilities.

In addition to its wind power project, the resort also is investing in solar power. It currently has more than 500 solar lights and it intends to invest in solar power for the local community.
