PRINCETON, N.J.—Dynamic Air Quality Solutions, a leading manufacturer and distributor of high-performance indoor air quality products, showcased its V8 air cleaning system at this year’s AHR Expo. Dynamic air cleaning systems utilize a technology called non-ionizing, polarized-media, which significantly reduces the energy and environmental footprint of an HVAC’s filtration system. Over the past five years, Dynamic has helped building owners save more than 78 million kWh in fan energy alone.

When Dynamic Air Cleaners are used as a substitute to high-efficiency passive filters, the savings can be as great as 75 percent less than fan energy. Maintenance is also dramatically reduced, with a typical lifespan of the V8’s disposable media being four to six years. Dynamic V8s have been part of many LEED project certifications, contributing to credits for IEQ (MERV 13), Energy and Atmosphere (reduced energy consumption) and Materials and Resources (less waste).

One group that knows the LEED system quite well is ASHRAE. The group is committed to making its headquarters a “living lab” for the HVAC&R industry. When the board of directors was looking to completely overhaul its 31,000-square-foot headquarters in Atlanta, the goal was to obtain Platinum certification. They looked to many energy-efficient technologies, and chose the Dynamic V8 to be used throughout the facility. Dynamic Air Cleaners have significantly less operation and maintenance costs, which makes for an easily maintainable indoor air filter and an overall healthier building. Three and a half years later, the original media has yet to need changing and continues to make the indoor air quality superior to the outdoor air.

“Nearly 90 percent of the cost of indoor air filtration is not the cost of the filter, but the cost of the energy and maintenance labor,” said Duke Wiser, president of Dynamic AQS. “Our installation at the ASHRAE headquarters showcases the ability of our air cleaners to provide a cost-effective alternative to passive filtration.”

Dynamic is also a key component to improving indoor air quality and energy efficiency for buildings that have implemented the ASHRAE Standard 62 IAQ Procedure as a means to reduce the traditional requirements for ventilation. In this approach, air cleaning is used as a substitute to potentially contaminated outside air. In many urban areas, the outside air can be the primary source of indoor contaminants. Therefore, using air to dilute indoor contaminants does not always make IAQ or economic sense. In many of these applications, design cooling and heating requirements have been reduced by as much as 40 percent.
