HILLSBORO, ORE.—The Crowne Plaza in Austin, Texas, has chosen Caroma, a leader in dual flush toilets, to provide 297 high efficiency toilets for the property’s newly renovated guestrooms. Crowne Plaza has selected Caroma toilets to help maximize water savings and reduce maintenance costs in the bathroom.

The entire hotel is being retrofitted with Sydney Smart 270 Easy Height Elongated toilets, a two button toilet using 1.28 gallons per flush for solid waste and 0.8 gallons for liquid and paper waste, averaging only 0.90 gallons based on a 1:4 full/half flush ratio. This saves 82 percent of the water used by the 5 gallon toilets previously installed. Assuming just a 50 percent occupancy rate and toilets flushed four times/day, that is a savings of more than 888,900 gallons of water in just one year.

Caroma developed the two button dual flush system more than 25 years ago and is making advances in design and technology. The Sydney Smart is WaterSense labeled and is the first 1.28/0.8 gpf dual flush toilet in North America. Additionally, Caroma toilets have a trapway nearly double the industry average, virtually eliminating blockages.

“We spoke with several other hotels that were using Caroma toilets prior to making our decision, and the feedback was very positive,” says Randy Brunnemann, general manager of Crowne Plaza Austin. “Caroma was chosen because of product longevity and the history of reduced maintenance. We now have one floor with Sydney Smart installed and are very pleased. We used to have three to five calls/week/floor for toilet problems, mainly blockages, and we have had none on that floor post-install. Combining lower maintenance with the substantial water savings, Caroma toilets were the right choice for our hotel.”
