ROGERS, ARK.—BioBased 1701s Insulation is the first spray polyurethane foam insulation to meet the stringent GREENGUARD Certification guidelines for indoor air quality. The GREENGUARD Certification Program is an industry-independent, third-party testing program for low-emitting products and materials. The first GREENGUARD Certification was awarded in the fall of 2002.

BioBased Insulation’s soy-based, water-blown, closed cell insulation product earned both the GREENGUARD Certification and the GREENGUARD Certification for Children & Schools.

“Our company is focused on developing insulation products that are more sustainable than traditional products,” said Mike Muccio, chief operating officer of BioBased Insulation. “We believe that sustainability means more than just adding bio-content to a product. It extends to how we do business and how we increase the sustainability of our products while reducing our carbon footprint.

“Because BioBased 1701s is bio-based, uses water instead of ozone-depleting chemicals as the blowing agent, and meets GREENGUARD Certification,” Muccio adds. “We believe that we’ve shown it is possible to produce a more sustainable product that still meets, and even exceeds competitive performance standards.”

The GREENGUARD Certification Process tests products for emissions of formaldehyde, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), aldehydes, respirable particles, ozone, and other pollutants using stringent environmental chamber protocols designed to simulate product use in typical indoor environments. The environmental chamber operation and testing protocols follow scientific principles established by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and its Environmental Technology Verification Program, the American Society of Testing Materials (ASTM), the State of Washington, Germany’s Federal Environment Agency, and other applicable government or industry programs.
