SAINT PAUL, MINN.—3M Architectural Markets introduces Custom Formed Reflectors, polymeric-based reflectors that increase the optical efficiency of LED and CFL light fixtures. Made in a free form custom optical design, the reflectors achieve up to 98 percent in reflectivity and allow product designers to put light exactly where they want it. With Custom Formed Reflectors from 3M, lighting designers can deliver more light with less energy.

Designed for use in architectural, commercial and retail lighting, as well as outdoor lighting, the engineered reflective optics of the Custom Formed Reflectors increase the light fixture’s lumen output by up to 30 percent. This added efficiency allows lighting designers to create reflectors with fewer LEDs and lower wattage CFL bulbs, saving energy without sacrificing brightness. This energy efficiency increases the potential for a product to achieve an Energy Star rating.

The design flexibility offered by Custom Formed Reflectors allows the creation of fixtures that place light exactly where it is needed, and keep it from being wasted where it isn’t needed. Designers have more flexibility to use indirect lighting to cut down on glare and to achieve other lighting goals. Custom Formed Reflectors are also designed to reflect true color, thus preserving the quality of the light.

The polymeric-based material used to create Custom Formed Reflectors is an electric insulator, which means the circuit board can contact the reflector, eliminating the need for an additional insulator.

Finally, the tooling used to prototype and produce Custom Formed Reflectors allows shorter lead times and reduced tooling costs compared to products that require injection molding. With energy and cost-saving benefits, Custom Formed Reflectors give lighting designers a valuable new tool to create their ideal light fixture.
