If you have not yet marked your calendars for this year’s events at which green lodging/sustainability will be a focus, be sure to do so. Details for some of the events are still sketchy at the moment but for others there is complete information on speakers, trade show participants, etc. Be sure to keep checking our Events calendar as the year unravels.

Just this past week I learned the dates of the 2011 West Coast Green Lodging Conference—August 21 to 24. I attended the first time event last summer in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., and eagerly await the details for this year’s follow-up at the Embassy Suites Lake Tahoe—Hotel & Ski Resort.

In just a couple of weeks, February 10 to 12, the NAFEM Show (North American Association of Foodservice Equipment Manufacturers) will be held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando. More than 500 foodservice equipment suppliers will be on hand—many of whom will be introducing new energy and water saving equipment. A “What’s Hot? What’s Cool” exhibit will feature new green products. Educational sessions will focus on sustainable food programs, corporate responsibility and other green topics.

Sustainable Meetings Conference in Portland, Ore.

A week after NAFEM, the sixth annual Sustainable Meetings Conference will take place in Portland, Ore., at the Doubletree Hotel Portland from February 20 to 23. The keynote speaker was just announced—Dr. Karl-Henrik Robèrt of The Natural Step International. The event will touch on numerous green meetings related topics, including an update of the progress of the APEX/ASTM Green Meetings and Events Standards. I will be attending and exhibiting at this event.

On March 7, the Hunter Hotel Investment Conference will feature a session entitled, “Green Hotels in This Market!” The International Association of Conference Centers annual conference from March 23 to 25 will feature one workshop focused on developing relationships with local farmers, and another focused on Green Seal’s GS-46 Environmental Standard for Restaurants and Food Services.

In April, from April 3 to 6, the Caribbean Tourism Organization Sustainable Tourism Conference will be held in Bermuda. In May be sure to attend Green Day, an annual event held just before the beginning of the HD Expo. This year’s Green Day will be held on May 17 in Las Vegas at the Sands Expo & Convention Center. The speaker lineup for Green Day is still being determined. Immediately following HD Expo, the National Restaurant Association Show will be held at McCormick Place in Chicago from May 21 to 24. Like NAFEM, the NRA Show is a great place to learn how to save energy and water, and reduce waste in the kitchen.

Focus on Guestroom Energy Management

At HITEC, held June 20 to 23 in Austin, Texas, exhibitors in the guestroom energy management system space will be on hand to demonstrate the latest technology advancements. In August, at the Global Congress on Legal, Safety & Security Solutions in Travel, human trafficking will be a featured topic.

A major change in the event schedule this year is the early appearance of Greenbuild. Typically held in November, this year’s conference and trade show will be held October 4 to 7 in Toronto. In November, the International Hotel, Motel + Restaurant Show and related AH&LA Fall Conference will feature green products and educational sessions. Finally, watch for details on a possible late 2011 green lodging conference planned by the newly forming American Green Lodging & Hospitality Assn.
