NATIONAL REPORT—Hotels are under pressure to lower energy use without sacrificing comfort or indoor air quality. That is why hotel energy retrofits should include radon retesting. When operators tighten the building envelope, rebalance ventilation, or improve lower-level spaces, they may also change how air moves through the property.
Energy performance is important, but a successful retrofit should do more than reduce utility costs. It should also support a healthier operating environment for guests and staff.
Plan for Airflow Changes
Many energy upgrades are designed to keep conditioned air where it belongs. Window improvements, insulation work, and HVAC adjustments can all help a hotel operate more efficiently. They can also affect pressure patterns in ways that are easy to miss during closeout.
That matters most in spaces connected to the ground. Basements, lower-level corridors, laundry rooms, storage areas, employee offices, and mechanical rooms may not always be part of the guest experience, but they still affect daily operations. Staff may spend long hours in these spaces, and air-quality issues there deserve the same attention as front-of-house comfort.
Add Radon Testing to IAQ Closeout
Hotel teams already think about filtration, humidity, and ventilation when they review indoor air quality after a project. Radon retesting should be part of that conversation when work affects foundations, crawl spaces, or below-grade rooms.
Because renovation work can affect radon levels, hotel energy retrofits need radon retesting when projects change ventilation, building pressure, or foundation-adjacent spaces.
This does not mean every retrofit creates a radon issue. It means operators should know when retesting belongs on the closeout checklist.
Prioritize Ground-Contact Spaces
Operators do not need to treat every room the same way. The most practical approach is to start with areas that sit below grade or directly above slab foundations. Older wings, back-of-house rooms, and converted lower-level spaces are especially worth reviewing after major energy improvements.
Retesting may also make sense after crawl-space sealing or foundation-adjacent work. These projects can be valuable sustainability investments, but they should still be followed by a careful look at how the building now breathes.
