This month has two key industry shows still to come—The Hospitality Show at The Venetian Resort Las Vegas from June 27 to 29 and HITEC at the Metro Toronto Convention Centre from June 26 to 29. When The Hospitality Show was announced, the folks behind HITEC were not happy about the Show being scheduled concurrent to their event. It has created a situation where both hoteliers and suppliers have had to either pick and choose or send representatives to both events.
Of course I look at every event through a sustainability lens and The Hospitality Show and HITEC both deliver content related to what I cover, and a worthwhile list of exhibitors focused on reducing waste and resource consumption. The event locations are also both doing great things.
First, The Hospitality Show. This first-time event is the result of a partnership between the American Hotel & Lodging Assn. (AHLA) and Questex’s Hotel Management publication. For a first-time event the organizers did quite well with more than 300 exhibitors expected. My rough estimate is about 60 exhibitors falling into the sustainability realm.
Tour of The Venetian Resort
The Hospitality Show has a dedicated page for sustainability and Questex has promised to measure and reduce carbon emissions associated with this year’s event. Falling into the sustainability category at the event: a tour at The Venetian Resort and four educational sessions with the following titles: ESG for the Hotel Industry: Demystifying Climate, D&I, and SEC Reporting Requirements; The Intersection of Technology Innovation and Global Sustainability; Waste Less, Reuse More, and Supply Chain Practices; and The ROI of “Doing Well by Doing Good”—ESG in Action.
All Access pass holders will be treated to a zero-waste lunch on both Wednesday, June 28, and Thursday, June 29, and leftovers will be donated to local charities or farms.
HITEC, presented by HFTP (Hospitality Financial and Technology Professionals) currently lists 343 exhibitors, with at least 20 to 25 addressing sustainability in one way or another—primarily energy management. The events schedule includes sessions with the following titles: ESG: From Movement to Essential Strategy; Exhibitor Tutorial 01A – Presented by: MODIO Guestroom Acoustic Control; Exhibitor Tutorial 06B – Presented by: Jule (Unlocking Electric Vehicle Charging Opportunities for Hotels: A Case Study); Unboxing Technology’s Role in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion; and the HFTP Women in Hospitality Technology Reception.
The Venetian Resort Las Vegas has been featured numerous times on Green Lodging News and has a page on its website highlighting its corporate responsibility commitment. The campus on which the property sits is powered by 100 percent renewable energy. The Metro Toronto Convention Centre diverts 90 percent of waste from landfills.
