The Estimated Environmental Impact of the AHLA F&B and Responsible Stay Summits

As reported here on Green Lodging News, the AHLA Food & Beverage Summit took place on Tuesday, March 3 and was followed on March 4 by the crossover AHLA Food & Beverage Summit and AHLA Responsible Stay Summit. All were held at the Hilton McClean Tysons Corner, Va. Hilton provided attendees with an after-event meeting impact report. (Click here to read the report in its entirety. The following are some of the highlights of the report for the Hilton McClean Tysons Corner location:

  • 155 participants
  • 1,380 meals
  • 122 roomnights
  • Energy use: 62,579 kBtu
  • Water use: 17,037 gallons
  • 2,103 pounds of waste
  • Estimated total emissions: 4.72 metric tons (The emissions footprint of this event accounts for both hotel operations—roomnights and meeting space—and meals served during the event. Meal-related emissions include the upstream impact of food production and the downstream impact of food waste and are calculated using third-party industry data.)
  • No plastic water bottles were used.
  • The hotel uses digital keys.

The Hilton report also includes Hilton Portfolio Performance Numbers to Date:

  • 2.9 million+ volunteer hours logged since 2017
  • 48.1 percent reduction in carbon emissions since 2008 (owned, managed and leased hotels)
  • 2.8 million+ bars of soap donated in 2024
  • All hotels mapped against environmental and social risks

Further down the report is a summary of steps taken to reduce energy consumption, conserve water, and reduce waste at the Hilton McClean Tysons Corner. Among those steps: energy management system in guestrooms, water efficient showerheads and landscaping, and on-site recycling.

The report wraps up with community engagement highlights from the Hilton McClean Tysons Corner—team members are trained on the issue of human trafficking, for example. There are also tips for traveling more sustainably and some tips on how to plan a sustainable meeting.
