BAA ATOLL, REPUBLIC OF MALDIVES—Vakkaru Maldives has appointed Mehdi Boudault as Marine Biologist, further reinforcing the resort’s long-standing commitment to marine stewardship within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll.

A French marine biologist, scientific diver and PADI Master Scuba Diver Trainer, Boudault holds a master’s degree in biology, ecology and evolution, specializing in tropical marine ecosystems. His academic training is complemented by extensive field experience across the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea, where he has led and contributed to coral restoration, nursery construction and reef monitoring initiatives.

In the Seychelles, Boudault served as Scientific Diver and Marine Biologist with Nature Seychelles, contributing to coral transplantation, bleaching mitigation measures and the implementation of CBASS (Coral Bleaching Automated Stress System) laboratory protocols. He later joined Coralive in Saudi Arabia as Junior Coral Biologist, focusing on coral nursery development, micro-fragmentation techniques and long-term monitoring of fragments within established nurseries.

Boudault has contributed to peer-reviewed scientific research and presented his work at international conferences, demonstrating a rigorous, science-led approach to reef restoration and conservation. His work reflects both technical precision and deep respect for the ecosystems he studies.

Weekly Marine Life Presentation

At Vakkaru Maldives, Boudault will be leading marine education and conservation initiatives in collaboration with the resort’s Splash Dive and Watersports Center. Each Wednesday from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m., he hosts a Marine Life Presentation, inviting guests to explore the island’s house reef, its coral communities and the remarkable biodiversity of Baa Atoll. The sessions offer guests an engaging insight into the complexity of reef ecosystems while underscoring the delicate balance that sustains life beneath the surface.

He also leads the resort’s Coral Adoption Program, inviting guests to take an active role in reef restoration through a $150 contribution toward the transplantation of coral fragments onto dedicated frames in the ocean surrounding Vakkaru. Participants receive updates on their adopted coral, fostering a meaningful, long-term connection to the reef while directly supporting the regeneration of vulnerable marine areas.

“Our island exists in harmony with the ocean that surrounds it,” commented Teddy Susanto Wiryawan, General Manager of Vakkaru Maldives. “Boudault’s arrival strengthens our commitment to understanding and protecting this environment within the UNESCO Biosphere Reserve of Baa Atoll. His expertise brings depth to every encounter with the reef, allowing our guests to experience it with greater awareness and purpose.”

Through Boudault’s appointment, Vakkaru Maldives further integrates marine conservation into the heart of the guest experience, ensuring that the beauty encountered today is not only admired but actively protected and restored for generations to come.
