In the green lodging world it is huge news when a new 1 Hotels property opens and that was certainly the case this past week with the official opening of the 1 West Hollywood. It is the first West Coast 1 Hotel for Barry Sternlicht’s Starwood Capital Group and joins three other 1 Hotels in New York City and Miami. As with the other 1 Hotels, 1 West Hollywood will be operated by SH Hotels & Resorts, a subsidiary of Starwood Capital Group.

Sternlicht and his team are experts at weaving together luxurious green design, highly efficient operations, unique and creative F&B, advocacy for a better planet, and community involvement.

In the case of the 285-room 1 West Hollywood, formerly The Jeremy, the property has been transformed into one of the most energy-efficient hotels in Los Angeles with an Energy Star score of 95. Smart energy-efficient zoning of A/C and fresh air keeps guests comfortable and LED lighting flows throughout the building. Designed by AvroKo and executed by SH Hotels & Resorts’ interior design team, the property’s conscious earthy design is inspired by the beauty and simplicity of raw materials: reclaimed timber and steel, recycled fiber carpeting, abundant native greenery and stonework. The reception desk is crafted from lumber, sourced from naturally fallen trees.

Vegetable Garden, Neighboring Beehive

Among its property-wide conservation practices is the inclusion of native and adaptive vegetation, a smart irrigation system that determines when soil needs water, a 100 percent organic, sustainably-grown vegetable garden and neighboring beehive and 100-year old olive trees.

Executive Chef Chris Crary has created a selection of zero-waste dishes. 1 Kitchen by Chris Crary serves a menu of locally and sustainably sourced California cuisine with Italian influences. Juniper Tree, 1 Hotel West Hollywood’s bar and lounge, offers handcrafted cocktails, Mediterranean wines (biodynamic and organic), local craft beers and refined bar snacks. In the lobby of the hotel is the Lobby Farmstand—a place to find fresh seasonal fruits.

In guestrooms, floor-to-ceiling windows bring in natural light. Touches include native greenery, reclaimed wood, earthen plaster, clay tones, marble bathrooms and organic cotton linens. The Field House x Performix gym features state-of-the-art weight training and cardio equipment and yoga classes are offered on Saturdays and Sundays.

Brand’s Sustainability Keystones

If you have not yet familiarized yourself with 1 Hotels’ Sustainability Keystones, I encourage you to do so. They apply to every 1 Hotel. The Keystones address the following: Environmental Impact; Advocacy, Education & Engagement; Human Health & Wellbeing; Resiliency & Ongoing Performance Improvement; and Food & Beverage Responsibility.

1 Hotels partners with organizations including The Natural Resources Defense Council, The Leonardo DiCaprio Foundation, Surfrider Foundation, Forest Stewardship Council and many others.

Starwood Capital Group has four additional hotels in its pipeline: 1 Hotel & Homes Cabo, 1 Hotel Haitang Bay, 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, and 1 Hotel Sunnyvale.

Be sure to read Green Lodging News for ongoing coverage of 1 Hotels.

How to Search on Our Website

Like other search engines you find online, a search using one word will produce articles with that word included. If you would like to search for something that is more than one word long—ozone laundry, for example—you will need to put quotation marks around the words or phrase. Ozone laundry would then be “ozone laundry” in the search.

Who is Your Sustainability Champion?

Green Lodging News is always looking to profile sustainability champions in our Personnel Profile section. If you would like to nominate someone for this section of Green Lodging News, contact me at (813) 510-3868, or by e-mail at editor@greenlodgingnews.com.

Looking for Guest Columnists

Every two weeks Green Lodging News posts a new guest column on its website. (Click here for examples.) The guest column also appears in the weekly e-newsletter. Green Lodging News is currently in need of industry experts to contribute occasional guest columns. Experts may include consultants, architects, designers, suppliers and those who own or operate green lodging establishments. Columns may be articles that take a stance on a particular subject or be strictly educational in nature. Columnists benefit by having their photo included along with a one paragraph description of their company. Interested in writing a column? Contact Glenn Hasek, publisher and editor, at (813) 510-3868, or by e-mail at editor@greenlodgingnews.com.

Get in the Green Suppliers Spotlight!

Green Lodging News, lodging’s leading environmental news source, announces the launch of Green Suppliers Spotlight, an e-blast to 19,598 subscribers that features the lodging industry’s leading green products and services. The e-blast features multiple vendors—unlike the current Green Supplier Spotlight that allows one supplier to “own” the Green Lodging News subscriber list for one e-blast. (Click here for a Green Suppliers Spotlight sample.)

Green Suppliers Spotlight is published weekly on Thursdays to general managers, owners, management companies, directors of sustainability, directors of engineering, facilities managers and many others who are either in purchasing positions or who influence purchasing decisions. Suppliers of green products and services throughout North America and beyond are invited to participate in the e-blast. (Minimum two suppliers per e-blast.) Green Suppliers Spotlight was created to give vendors an opportunity to reach a high number of industry purchasers at a very low cost—as low as $200 per e-mail. (Click here for rate sheet.)

Those advertising in Green Suppliers Spotlight can include up to 100 words, one image, contact information and multiple links to their website in their ad. At the end of each month, a report will be sent to each supplier with information on delivered e-mails, opens and click-throughs.
