ROCHESTER HILLS, MICH.—Toilet water leaks escalate water, sewer and maintenance costs and can impact guest satisfaction—especially when multiplied by the number of toilets installed at a hotel property. Typically, this happens with outdated flapper and chain systems. One company, Smarter Flush (www.smarterflush.com), has developed a dual-flush conversion kit to not only eliminate water leaks and inefficiencies but to also give guests the option of choosing a one-gallon flush for liquid waste or a two-gallon flush for solid waste. No new toilet—$350 to $800—is needed.
According to Mel Kanar, Sales V.P. at Smarter Flush, a leaking toilet can waste 30 to 500 gallons per day. About 20 percent of all toilets leak at any moment, often due to deteriorating flappers.
“The conversion kits are available in 2-inch and 3-inch configurations and are designed to work with most hospitality toilet models,” Kanar says. “Water flow and flushing power are not negatively impacted. An installation takes just minutes, and many properties can recover their investment in just a few months. Once the upgrade pays for itself, the continued savings remain year after year.”
Saves More Water Than Low-Flow Toilets
A continuously leaking toilet may waste over tens of thousands of gallons per year and often goes undetected in guest bathrooms or low‑use areas. Leaky toilets can impact green certification scores. The Smarter Flush system saves up to 26 percent more water than standard low‑flow toilets.
A hotel with 100 rooms using a 3.5-gallon toilet can save more than 1 million gallons in water consumption per year. Faster tank refill allows the fill valve to shut off sooner—saving water automatically, every day.
“With our smarter flush conversion kit you can reduce your water and sewer costs as much as 20 percent to 40 percent,” Kanar says.
Overflow Water Conserver
The Smarter Flush conversion kit includes an Overflow Water Conserver device that attaches to the end of the refill hose and redirects water into the tank instead of wasting it down the overflow tube.
“Most toilets still rely on outdated designs that waste clean water with every flush,” Kanar says. “Smarter Flush modernizes the toilet with engineered solutions that control, redirect, and reuse water that would otherwise be lost. This effective solution helps hotels cut water and sewer costs without sacrificing flush performance or user experience. Even new low-flow toilets benefit from dual-flush conversion, with water savings translating directly into lower utility bills.”
Although 70 percent of Earth’s surface is water, only 3 percent is fresh, and less than 1 percent is accessible for daily use. Climate change, aging infrastructure, and population growth place added stress on this finite resource.
