SCHAUMBURG, ILL.—The Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center has announced the conversion of its chlorine recreation facility into an eco-friendly mineral pool. As the first hotel in Illinois to replace chlorine with a mineral-based formula, the hotel’s new pool will contain fewer waterborne irritants and no strong chlorine odor.
“We are excited to be the first hotel in Illinois to offer guests a mineral-based pool experience that is gentler on the skin and eyes,” said Thomas Robertson, general manager. “These environmental benefits further our operational goal to implement conservation and environmental practices while delivering a superior guest experience.”
The mineral pool system sanitizes the entire pool by a chemical reaction that occurs when the pool’s water passes through an electrolytic cell, generating an electric current that transforms the chlorine into chlorine gas, which goes directly into the pool’s solution. The salinity levels in the solution compare to that of a human tear, and guests can enjoy smoother-feeling water, no itchy skin and less eye irritation.
The conversion was completed on Friday, February 29 and represents the first of the hotel’s many environmentally friendly initiatives. Since its inception, the Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center has worked with the building’s architect, John Portman, to ensure it preserves the wetlands on the property. Aside from wetland preservation, department-wide recycling, and energy-saving efforts, the hotel currently offers Green Meeting packages, which include recycling totes for meetings, light sensors in meeting rooms and organic food purveyors.
The Renaissance Schaumburg Hotel & Convention Center is an award-winning, contemporary property that boasts nearly 150,000 square feet of technologically enhanced meeting and convention space. Designed by the renowned John Portman & Associates, the hotel blends futuristic architecture with a heightened appreciation for the surrounding natural wetlands.
