Birthdays are amazing things. Mel Brooks turned 100 on June 28. On December 13, Dick Van Dyke did the same. George Burns, who made it to 100, famously joked many times that he had outlived his doctor. Betty White passed just a few weeks shy of 100. She was an incredible lady, dedicating her life to a variety of animal welfare and conservation organizations. These people, who put smiles on the faces of billions, experienced 40 percent of our nation’s history—wow!

As I am writing this, the United States is about to turn 250 years old. What makes America great? There are of course many things but what stands out for me is the kindness of people who care about each other and the fate of our environment, the setting aside of vast amounts of land for parks and preservation, and, in a nod to our own industry, the many entrepreneurs who dreamed big and continue to dream big. I think of Conrad Hilton opening his first hotel in 1925, Marriott starting in 1927 as a nine-seat A&W root beer stand run by J. Willard and Alice Marriott, and much more recently the launch of 1 Hotels by visionary hotelier Barry Sternlicht.

Happy Birthday to Green Lodging News

Green Lodging News turns 20 this month (8 percent of our nation’s history, LOL). A big thank you to every sponsor, every contributor, every reader, every colleague, my family and friends for your support along this journey. I could not have made it without you.

Green Lodging News will continue to thrive as suppliers continue to utilize Green Lodging News as a promotional tool. It is a win-win deal. Public relations folks should continue to send news and guest column ideas my way. For those of you who engage with my publication solely as a reader, please continue to do so and share what you like with your industry colleagues.

In 2006, what now seems so long ago, Facebook and Twitter were launched, Time magazine named “You” as the Person of the Year, Italy knocked off France in the World Cup, and I wrote column No. 1. Today I am up to column No. 1,022. How quickly time flies.

Thank you again for all your support!

Looking for Guest Columnists

Green Lodging News is currently in need of industry experts to contribute occasional guest columns. Experts may include consultants, architects, designers, suppliers, and those who own or operate green lodging establishments. Columns may be articles that take a stance on a particular subject or be strictly educational in nature.
