Vertical Package Terminal Air Conditioners Stand Tall to Save Energy

NATIONAL REPORT—For many reasons—aesthetics, noise reduction, energy efficiency—hoteliers have been opting for vertical package terminal air conditioners (vertical PTACs, aka VTACs) instead of PTACs for their guestrooms. VTACs, which are placed discreetly in an enclosed corner closet, are being implemented most often in suite environments with multiple rooms but also are appropriate for single-room configurations. “There are different reasons for opting for VTACs, but cost is an important one; they are less expensive than two PTACs,” says Jim Benz, marketing manager for air-conditioning products for GE Consumer & Industrial. “Looks are also important. It looks like you have central air...

Survey: Businesses Investing in Energy Efficiency Measures

MILWAUKEE, WISC.—Results from a first-time survey of North American business leaders indicate they expect energy prices to continue to rise, and plan to invest in energy efficiency measures to help fight rising costs. Despite the trend toward sustainability, executives cite a desire to decrease energy expenditures within their organizations as a greater motivator than environmental responsibility. Those are some of the findings of the research commissioned by Johnson Controls Inc. The Johnson Controls Energy Efficiency Indicator research identified individuals from a wide range of facilities and locations who were decision makers for energy management issues within organizations and asked how...

The budget chain will make all public areas in their hotels smoke free by the beginning of July 2007 but go a step further by eradicating smoking from all rooms completely by the turn of the year. Travelodge, serving over 6.5 million each year and operating 318 U.K. hotels, made the move following overwhelming feedback on the subject from both customers and staff. Research by...

SAN FRANCISCO—The Orchard Garden Hotel has been awarded Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) certification by the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC). San Francisco’s first hotel to earn this honor, the Orchard Garden is only the fourth hotel in the United States to earn this certification. LEED is the USGBC’s leading edge system for designing and constructing the world’s greenest, energy-efficient, high performing buildings. The 86-room hotel is set in the heart of San Francisco—one block from Union Square, steps away from the Chinatown gate and adjacent to the Financial District. Inspiration for the hotel comes from its 83-year-old...

Sandals Ocho Rios Beach and Villa Resort Wins American Express Award

MIAMI—The Caribbean hospitality industry’s growth, while positive for the countries’ economies, continues to have a major impact on the environment. Sensitizing hotels and fostering a way for them to integrate better social and environmental practices into day-to-day business decisions is a critical first step to preserve the area. Working towards that goal each year, American Express, in association with the Caribbean Hotel Association (CHA), recognizes those Caribbean hotels whose efforts stand out and position them at the cutting edge of social and environmental responsibility. “Being environmentally-conscious is not only important to the community, but it also makes good business sense,”...

The Sandpearl resort is passionate about not putting chlorine waste into...

Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre Addition to Include ‘Living Roof’

VANCOUVER, B.C.—A green facility since it opened in 1987, the Vancouver Convention & Exhibition Centre (VCEC) is on track to triple its size in time for the 2010 Winter Olympics. The addition to the existing building will be a dramatic one and will include a six-acre green “living” roof, seawater heating and cooling, a fish habitat built into the building’s foundation, and an on-site water treatment facility. Forty percent of the addition will sit over the water, creating a striking contrast to the famous fabric roof sails that are part of the original building. According to Catherine Wong, vice president...
