Biggest Barrier to Mattress Recycling: Not Knowing It Can Be Done

NATIONAL REPORT—In recent years, mattress makers have taken steps to extend the life of the mattress—building in removable pillow tops and other replaceable components—but at the end of a mattress’ life there is still a great chance that it will end up in a local landfill. NATIONAL REPORT—Two Hyatt Hotels Corp. properties have introduced meetings programs that allow guests to give back by volunteering their time. The  (Nev.) recently announced its Groups Giving Back offer, which combines philanthropy with volunteering opportunities. EPA Announces Updated Energy Star Standards for Lighting

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is announcing updated standards for light fixtures to qualify for the Energy Star label—an efficiency program that has saved consumers money on their energy bills while contributing to cleaner air and protecting people’s health since 1992. Effective October 1, 2011, to qualify for the Energy Star label light fixtures will need to increase efficiency 30 percent above currently qualified fluorescent-based fixtures. In 2013, performance requirements will increase further, providing 40 percent higher efficiency compared to currently qualified models. WHITE PLAINS, N.Y.—A new Four Points by Sheraton in Tallahassee is expected to become the brand’s first LEED-certified property, Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide, Inc. announced. LEED Volume Program Celebrates 500th Certified Pilot Project

WASHINGTON, D.C.—More than 500 building projects have certified through the LEED Volume Program since the pilot launched in 2006, according to the U.S. Green Building Council. Hilton Foundation Pledges $50 Million to Improve Global Water Conditions

WASHINGTON, D.C.—The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation announced a pledge of $50 million to address the water needs of more than one million people in sub-Saharan Africa and water stressed areas of India and Mexico. Geilo, Norway to Host Annual European Ecotourism Conference

GEILO, NORWAY—The Norwegian Ecotourism Assn. and The International Ecotourism Society (TIES) have announced the second annual European Ecotourism Conference (EuroEco), to be hosted in Geilo, Norway, from May 30 to June 3, 2011.
