LAS VEGAS—NEWH Inc.—the Hospitality Industry Network is partnering with the 2012 Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (HD Expo) to bring a series of green programming to the annual tradeshow at the Sands Expo Convention Center in Las Vegas, May 15 to 17.

The premier event is the Green Voice Luncheon: The Sustainable Design Competition Awards and Green Panel Discussion with the Experts, which will take place on Tuesday, May 15, from noon until 1:30 pm. Panelists include Herve Houdre, general manager, Intercontinental Barclay, New York, a noted author and speaker on sustainable lodging practices; Kathryn Fernholz, executive director, Dovetail Partners, a forest certification and resource management auditor, lecturer, and advisor; Jeanne Varney, lecturer, Cornell School of Hotel Management, and principal, Olive Hospitality Consulting; and lastly, Susan Inglis, executive director, Sustainable Furnishings Council, an international sustainability consultant and sustainable product developer.

From design to procurement to consumer and owner responsibility, this panel will channel these diverse influences on hospitality into an interconnected approach to sustainability, looking at how sustainable practices are impacting the industry.

Varying Perspectives Included

“I wanted to bring in people from different walks of life, with a lot of varying perspectives, so the panel lends itself to an interesting discussion,” explains David Mahood, NEWH’s vice president of sustainable hospitality and the panel’s moderator. “We get so focused on the green building side that the discussions stay corralled in green building. It will be interesting to have a wide-ranging discussion.”

To keep the conversations going, Green Conversations are embedded in the conference, a series of 30-minute, one-on-one interviews between the panel’s sustainability experts and NEWH Sustainable Committee members. Sponsored by JLF/lonemeadow and Arclite, these live, free flowing, and interactive interviews (which will take place at the Green Voice booth No. 3832) will expand on issues discussed during the green luncheon panel discussion as well as others posed by the audience.

“NEWH is proud to be conducting sustainable education at HD Expo, and we encourage all NEWH members and supporters to take advantage of this new ‘green’ format for 2012,” says Sheila Lohmiller, executive director for NEWH.
