SHELTON, CONN.—Jekyll Island, Ga., has its first new hotel in 35 years with the grand opening of the new Hampton Inn and Suites, announced New Castle Hotels & Resorts, which will manage the property on behalf of co-owners Jekyll Ocean Oaks, LLC, an affiliate of the ownership group of the Jekyll Island Club Hotel.

In its building design and operation, the new hotel is focused on sustainability to compliment the island’s environment and is among the greenest hotels in New Castle’s portfolio, having used many recycled materials during construction, underscoring the property owner’s commitment to green business and building practices. A solar power system helps heat the property’s hot water, and heat generated by the laundry facilities supplements the central heating system. The property collects rain water for landscape irrigation and throughout the building process extensive efforts were made to preserve trees surrounding the property. Special lighting helps ensure that the island’s turtle population is not disturbed. The hotel is a member of the Green Hotel Assn., a group of environmentally-friendly properties whose managers foster programs that reduce solid waste and conserve energy and water.

The beachfront property boasts 138 guestrooms, including 88 suites with balconies, and direct access to the beach. Amenities include a heated outdoor pool, children’s pool, large hot tub, fitness center, business center, meeting facilities, nature trails, complimentary hot breakfast buffet and free wireless Internet throughout the hotel. Located at 200 South Beachview Drive, the hotel is minutes from the shops, restaurants and attractions of Jekyll Island’s historic district.

Numerous Outdoor Activities

Other local activities include the Summer Waves Waterpark, the Georgia Sea Turtle Center, dolphin-watching cruises, a choice of four golf courses totaling 63 holes, fishing and boating, carriage rides and casino cruises. The hotel is just 17 miles from the Brunswick Golden Isle Airport in Brunswick, Ga. (serviced by Delta partner ASA) and 65 miles from both Jacksonville International Airport in Jacksonville, Fla., and Savannah Airport in Savannah, Ga.

“New Castle Hotels is proud to be a part of the first hotel project on Jekyll Island in more than 35 years,” says Gerald P. Chase, president and COO of the hotel’s ownership and development company and its third-party manager. “Jekyll Island’s location on the eastern seaboard and the ongoing revitalization of the island will draw both business and leisure travelers to the new Hampton Inn and Suites.”

New Castle Hotels & Resorts’ portfolio includes 29 hotels the company manages, owns or is developing in the United States and Canada. New Castle will celebrate its 30th anniversary in 2010.
