LAS VEGAS—The speaker lineup has been finalized for Green Day on May 17, an event held one day prior to the beginning of the 2011 Hospitality Design Exposition & Conference (The HD Expo). Both Green Day and The HD Expo are presented by Hospitality Design magazine and produced by the Hospitality Design Group and will take place at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas.

Green Day will begin with a luncheon at which the winner of the NEWH Sustainable Hospitality Student Design Competition— Jamie Matthews Ivey, LEED AP—will be announced. The two winners of the Earth Minded Awards—Hotel Andaluz in the Project category and Valley Forge Fabrics in the Product category—will also be presented with their awards.

The keynote presenter will be Michael Jantzen, an internationally known artist/designer whose work has been featured in hundreds of articles in books, magazines, and newspapers around the world. The title of Jantzen’s presentation is “Designs for a Green Dream Vacation.” Most of what Jantzen does merges art, architecture, technology, and sustainable design into one unique experience. In recent years he has been developing many hospitality design concepts that attempt to demonstrate how high-end, luxury accommodations such as hotels, and resorts, can be designed in an exciting and eco-friendly way.

Focus on Hotel Andaluz

Darin Sand, director of sustainability, Hotel Andaluz, will discuss the green aspects of the renovated Hotel Andaluz in his “Sustainability and Luxury in a Historic Hotel” session. The Hotel Andaluz, located in Albuquerque, N.M., combines upscale boutique hospitality, historic preservation, and the latest in green technology.

Steve Justrich, principal, Justrich Design Inc., will present “Sustainable Interiors: Using Recycled, Renewable, and Natural Finishes. He will focus on the interior renovation of the Glen Oaks Big Sur, located in Big Sur, Calif. In “suStain + future,” architect Craig Sean Palacios will feature case studies of three projects that go beyond “standard” sustainable design.

James Henderson, CEO/president, Atmosphere Hospitality Management Services, LLC will discuss his new green hotel brand in “Adoba Eco Hotel & Suites: Creating a LEED Certified Sustainable Hotel Brand.” Following Henderson, Lauren Yarmuth, principal, YRG Sustainability, will address current trends in sustainability in “Sustainability Today: Trends and Best Practices.”

In “Designing with Community in Mind,” Richard Nightingale, director, Kilburn Nightingale Architects and a finalist in the Tourism for Tomorrow Awards for his work at Guludo Beach Lodge in Mozambique, will share his latest global work and the impact his projects have had on everything from access to clean drinking water to infant mortality.
