CHICAGO—Hyatt Hotels Corp. announced a sponsorship arrangement with The Paulson Institute, which is partnering with the China Association of Mayors to enhance urban sustainability practices and policies in China. The collaboration signifies Hyatt’s commitment to furthering China’s sustainable urban growth and underscores Hyatt’s commitment to local contributions that tackle global issues.

Jointly developed by The Paulson Institute and China Association of Mayors, the Chinese Mayors Urban Sustainability Training Program, to be launched in 2013, is a three-week intensive training in the United States and China, aiming to provide practical knowledge to Chinese municipal leaders on enhancing sustainability efforts.

“The success of China’s urbanization will be critical to its economic and social development,” said Mark Hoplamazian, president and CEO, Hyatt Hotels Corp. “Sharing the same commitment to urban sustainability with The Paulson Institute and China Association of Mayors, Hyatt is greatly honored to join hands with these two and support the Chinese Mayors Urban Sustainability Training Program, which addresses the challenges and opportunities of China’s urbanization through a collaborative approach. As a global company with many hotels and ongoing development and expansion throughout China, we are focusing every day on responsible, sustainable urban growth and furthering our commitment to enhancing the communities in which we live and work.”

More Than a Sponsor

In addition to being the corporate sponsor for The Paulson Institute’s participation in the training program, Hyatt will also share its own experience in fostering innovation and sustainability with program participants.

The three-part training program will start with classroom instruction at the University of Chicago’s Graham School of Continuing Liberal and Professional Studies. Following a week of study in Chicago, program fellows will travel to other cities in the United States to learn about and observe successful urban sustainability projects. In the third portion of the program, participating mayors will attend Tsinghua University in Beijing to offer China-specific instruction on sustainability program implementation.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed by The Paulson Institute and the China Association of Mayors to establish this collaboration during the second annual Cities of the Future conference on December 4, 2012, in Beijing, China. The conference is a practical seminar that brings together leading thinkers and practitioners to explore best practices and effective methods for promoting sustainability in cities across China and around the world.

“I’m delighted to partner with the China Association of Mayors to launch this training program, and I look forward to hosting these mayors in my hometown of Chicago,” said The Paulson Institute chairman Henry M. Paulson, Jr. during the signing. “By deepening mayors’ understanding of sustainable urban practices and ways they can implement these over time, we will help them provide more energy- and resource-efficient cities and a better livelihood for Chinese citizens.”

Hyatt’s Hoplamazian also participated in the conference and shared his views on ways global and local corporations are incorporating urban sustainability into their strategic plans.
