March 3 to 4, I will be attending the AHLA Responsible Stay and Food & Beverage Summits at the Hilton McLean Tysons Corner (Va.). Green Lodging News is the media sponsor. An impressive lineup of speakers will be there with educational sessions in Responsible Stay and F&B. Also planned are crossover sessions that touch on both Responsible Stay and F&B. Be sure to watch for coverage of the Summits on Green Lodging News in the coming days.

No other event in the U.S. lodging industry is so focused on corporate social responsibility and no other event attracts such a high caliber group of speakers and attendees who spend their days reducing their company’s environmental footprint. This is my third year attending the event. I am looking forward to chatting with the heads of sustainability from the major brands.

For those of you not familiar with AHLA Responsible Stay, it is a hotel-industry-wide commitment to strengthening sustainability that focuses on four core principles: energy efficiency, waste reduction, water conservation, and responsible sourcing.

Forty industry companies have endorsed Responsible Stay—from Accor to Hilton to Marriott to Wyndham. Thirty-two state associations are Responsible Stay Partners. Click here to links to hotel company initiatives available on the Responsible Stay site. Additional resources available include The Sustainable Savings Guide and many links to guidance in Energy Efficiency, Water Conservation, Waste Reduction, and Responsible Sourcing. Also available: the latest Green Lodging Trends Report and links to key components of Responsible Stay: Dignity of Work Pledge, Green Key Global certification, and Hotel Kitchen.

The Hilton McLean Tysons Corner is an appropriate venue for the summits. It is Green Key Certified and it features high-efficiency water fixtures throughout all bathrooms, LED lighting throughout the hotel, and smart thermostats in all guestrooms. The food and beverage team utilizes honey from its four Rooftop Bee Colonies, and fresh finishing herbs, chilis, and microgreens are grown seasonally in the Chef’s Herb Garden, located on the hotel grounds. Guests are invited to use digital key rather than plastic key cards. Hilton diverts approximately 100 tons of plastic from the landfill annually using digital key.
