WASHINGTON, D.C.—Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown has installed 275 solar panels on the hotel’s rooftop to offset energy consumption. With a long history of environmental stewardship, Fairmont has fully embraced the company-wide initiative designed to reduce the impact of hotel operations on the environment.

“Adding solar panels to our rooftop significantly increases our commitment to energy conservation, and the reduction of carbon emissions contributes to a cleaner environment,” says Mark Huntley, Regional Vice President & General Manager.

The solar panels are expected to produce 130,000 kilowatt hours for the first year, and offset electricity by at least 2 percent. Installed by ROI Construction, the panels’ power output is 420W per panel. They help to reduce the hotel’s carbon footprint by producing solar energy to feed the electrical grid, replacing reliance on fossil fuels.

Fairmont Washington, D.C., Georgetown is committed to protecting the environment. The hotel’s Sustainability Committee develops a number of programs incorporating the environmental mantra “reduce, reuse and recycle” into the hotel’s daily operating practices. A brief sampling of these initiatives includes:

  • Installation of 275 solar panels on the rooftop;
  • 5 Green Key Award by Green Key Global;
  • Four rooftop honeybee hives—produces 150 pounds of honey annually;
  • Elimination of all single use plastic;
  • Orbisk food waste program;
  • Composting Program;
  • Refillable water station on all guestroom floors and public areas; and
  • Electric vehicle charging stations.
