PITTSBURGH—Fairmont Pittsburgh announced that it has been named Fairmont Hotels & Resorts 2012 Environmental Hotel of the Year. The award recognizes Fairmont properties around the world for outstanding commitment to the Green Partnership Program, a company-wide environmental stewardship program. The announcement was made by Jennifer Fox, president of Fairmont Hotels & Resorts.

“The colleagues of Fairmont Pittsburgh have an obvious enthusiasm for environmental stewardship, and we are proud to honor them with this award,” said Sarah Dayboll, director of environmental affairs, Fairmont Hotels & Resorts. “Their outstanding efforts regarding energy and carbon reduction, water conservation, waste minimization and fostering environmentally focused local community partnerships are a natural representation of our Green Partnership Program.”

As Environmental Hotel of the Year, Fairmont Pittsburgh received $1,000 to donate to a local environmental organization of its choice. Friends of the Riverfront, a local organization working to protect and restore the region’s rivers and riverfronts, was selected as the recipient of the donation. Fairmont Pittsburgh colleagues will present a check to Friends of the Riverfront during a volunteer cleanup day along the Eliza Furnace Trail on April 14.

Fairmont Pittsburgh received Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) certification at the Gold level from the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) shortly after opening in March 2010. Sustainable design and construction were utilized throughout the hotel, as well as innovative waste management and energy saving practices. In addition, Fairmont Pittsburgh works closely with Grow Pittsburgh, a nonprofit dedicated to demonstrating, teaching and promoting responsible urban food production. Since launching the partnership in 2011, Fairmont Pittsburgh has donated more than $15,000 to the organization and participated in ongoing volunteer outreach.

Fairmont Pittsburgh is located in the heart of Downtown Pittsburgh and within walking distance to the Cultural District, Market Square and world-class sporting venues. The contemporary Four Diamond property is Pittsburgh’s first LEED Gold certified hotel.
