PORTLAND, ORE.—The Doubletree Hotel Portland announced that it has been selected as the third place recipient in the “100 Best Green Companies to Work For in Oregon,” as well as one of the “Oregon’s 100 Best Companies to Work For” in separate rankings by Oregon Business Magazine. Both awards were determined by an anonymous employee survey, coupled with an independent assessment of the employers’ sustainability practices and employee benefits program. The survey then ranks companies by their relative scores, and shares the results with the participants to help inform future workplace practices.

According to Oregon Business, the 100 Best Green survey asked the organization about recognizing employees for reducing energy; helping subsidize employees’ public transit passes; allowing for green means of transport; using energy efficient lighting; purchasing of renewable energy; recycling office waste; using nontoxic materials; making business decisions based on sustainable values; reducing energy consumption and pollution; and commitment to sustainability as part of the organization’s core business strategy. A total of 372 companies completed this year’s survey, and the rankings were revealed at an awards ceremony held in Portland last month.

The 100 Best Companies to Work For survey began in 1994, and ranks companies based on survey results from a minimum of 20 percent of the company’s workforce. This is the third year that the Doubletree has received this honor—they were also selected in 2004 and again in 2007. The Doubletree was the first hotel in the state to be ranked as a 100 Best Company.

Reputation for Pioneering

“When the hotel began its sustainable journey five years ago, we quickly discovered how much there was to learn,” Faulstick said. “From the start, it has been the hotel’s team members who provided the enthusiasm to seek more knowledge and find ways to improve our business practices surrounding sustainability. Along the way, the hotel has received awards and recognition from a variety of sources and developed a reputation for being pioneers in our industry.”

The Doubletree Hotel Portland is a nationally recognized leader in the area of sustainable hospitality, and was the first lodging property in Oregon to earn the rigorous Green Seal GS-33 certification in 2006. The Doubletree Portland has received a number of local, regional, and national accolades, including the Good Earthkeeping Award from the American Hotel & Lodging Assn., the State of Oregon Governor Exemplar Award, a City Of Portland BEST Award, a Metafore Innovation Award, and a Pacific Power Stewardship Star Award, among others.

“Although we did not set out to win awards, it is great affirmation of our efforts,” Faulstick continued. “To receive this type of recognition from a survey of our employees who continue to push for higher standards, more education, and who strive themselves to set an example as leaders in sustainable hospitality is an especially great honor.”
