BUFFALO, N.Y.—Gideon Putnam Resort, a historic upstate New York property managed by Delaware North Companies Parks & Resorts, has registered its GreenPath environmental management system to the guidelines put forth by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO). The announcement came after an independent, third-party auditor evaluated the strength and validity of Delaware North’s environmental management system and its progress toward meeting the objectives outlined in the plan.

GreenPath, the name given to Delaware North’s companywide environmental initiative, was implemented at Gideon Putnam last year when the company began operating the property for the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. GreenPath includes a recycling plan, a chemical identification process and water conservation opportunities. In addition, the resort offers several eco-friendly amenities such as conservation cards in guestrooms, fluorescent light bulbs and an alkaline battery recycling program.

“GreenPath has two primary objectives,” said John Huey, director of environmental affairs for Delaware North. “First, it guides Delaware North units toward environmental improvement. Second, it ensures our environmental management system conforms to the ISO 14001 standards even when the company isn’t seeking ISO registration.”

Since 2001, when Delaware North became the first U.S. hospitality company to have its environmental management system registered to ISO 14001, more than 15 Delaware North-owned or -managed properties have met the rigorous standards. The Lodge at Geneva-on-the-Lake in Ohio and Delaware North Companies’ corporate office in Buffalo, N.Y., are two other locations that recently received ISO 14001 registration.

By following ISO requirements, the company consistently identifies and attempts to control the environmental impact of its activities and products. Through GreenPath, company associates can improve Delaware North’s environmental performance by implementing and following a systematic approach at each location, promoting environmental excellence.
