LOS ANGELES—The city of Wiesbaden in southwest Germany is the starting point for a visit to the Rheingau region that runs 38 kilometers along the Rhine River between the cities of Wiesbaden and Lochhausen. The area is internationally renowned for its wine production and mild climate and the city of Wiesbaden is famous for its numerous hot springs that have attracted visitors since Roman times. This historic city is also renowned for its architectural sites and now hosts its first Green Globe certified hotel.

Crowne Plaza Wiesbaden joins more than 70 other Green Globe certified hotels and congress centers in Germany, all working to improve their sustainable operations and management. The hotel scored an impressive 89 percent compliance score and passed Green Globe’s 39 mandatory core criteria. To monitor its energy, water and waste usage, the hotel uses IHG’s Green Engage advanced online system, which also provides recommended actions to improve the property’s energy conservation and carbon footprint.

Jan Heupers, General Manager at Crowne Plaza Wiesbaden said, “We are happy and proud to be Green Globe certified, the first hotel in the city of Wiesbaden.”

A Long-Term Commitment

Green Globe certification represents not just a one-off award for the hotel but a process that carries though the life of the property. The hotel aims for best practices in energy and water conservation as well as waste management. The increased usage of more energy efficient LED lighting is a fundamental step, and long-term sustainable strategies are being put in place to reduce the overall environmental footprint.

The commitment to promoting eco-friendly objectives is an ongoing effort by all management and staff and promoted to the supply chain. Monthly meetings are held amongst section heads to review waste management costs and corresponding action is then taken. Associates have also begun carpooling to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. And since being certified Green Globe, the hotel has informed suppliers that chemically based products or products that have significant negative effects on the environment will be withdrawn from use.

Both of Crowne Plaza Wiesbaden’s two restaurants “lili Lounge & Restaurant” and “Vinothek,” proudly showcase wines from the local region. Famous for its Riesling wines, Wiesbaden is also the gateway to the Rheingau and its numerous vineyards. The region is one of the smallest but one of the most important of Germany’s 13 wine regions. Local produce from farms and businesses are preferred when creating local specialty dishes to match wines served as well as to support local economies. And half portion meal options are offered to guests while straws, condiments and water refills are available on a request basis in efforts to further reduce waste.
