AVALON, N.J.—Green Day, a fun and educational event focusing on green initiatives, ecology and the environment, took place today, July 16, at the Concord Suites in Avalon, N.J. The hotel invited everyone in the community to come and learn about ways they can be more environmentally aware and adopt green practices at home.

In addition to featuring many of Concord Suites’ green initiatives, the Cape May County Zoo, EcoVentures, the N.J. Audubon Society and other environmentally conscious organizations participated with interactive displays and entertainment including singer, songwriter and tale spinner Valerie Vaughn. The day also included recycling crafts, giveaways and healthy refreshments.

Concord Suites is all about being green. According to a news release, it earned recognition as a TripAdvisor GreenLeader, received the Cape May County Chamber of Commerce Conservation Award, and was recognized by Green Lodging News for its green initiatives. The management and the owners said they are continually searching for ways to reduce their environmental footprint.

Last year the resort installed a 434-panel solar array on its rooftop that now provides the Concord with 60 percent of its overall energy usage.

Additional green efforts include energy-efficient light fixtures and bulbs, additional insulation, and new high-efficiency air-conditioning and heating units. Concord also uses 70 percent tree-free paper products such as toilet paper and tissues in all suites, and employs recycling programs prominently throughout the hotel.

Admission was free.
