NEW YORK—Scottish artist Jephson Robb challenges the notion that beautiful objects cannot be practical with his Quiet collection. Conceived as a series of work and occasional tables where subtle details elevate the typical pedestal table to both sculpture and functional object, the Quiet collection will be introduced by Bernhardt Design in April 2013.

“So often tables are either pretty little things to support a drink or newspaper, or they are workhorses that are functional, but unattractive,” according to Robb. “At first glance, these tables may appear to be just some new piece of eye candy, but once you come close and begin to use them, you realize there’s actually more than meets the eye.”

As a sculptor, designer and conceptual artist, Jephson Robb is no stranger to accentuating subtle visual and physical cues to marry beauty with functionality. Jerry Helling, president of Bernhardt Design, notes, “Jephson’s work has a way of revealing itself through interaction. It is often so simple and elegant, yet impactful, because he understands the importance of finely tuned details.”

Materials Include Walnut, Stainless Steel

With pared back silhouettes and rich materials like American walnut and brushed stainless steel, Quiet exudes sophisticated minimalism. The deep beveled solid wood edge makes each table appear wafer-thin while still being quite substantial. An almost imperceptible polished ring adorns the stem—an unexpected piece of jewelry artfully reflecting light. The brushed base is slightly raised to cast a gentle shadow, suggesting depth and stability.

However, though the Quiet form is demure, it is also a practical work table. Designed to be pulled up close and moved around, Quiet tables support both conversations and laptops. Under the table surface, you find a continuous carved pull channel to help easily move the tables as needed. The flat base rests atop a custom glide plate designed so Quiet can travel easily across most floors.

Quiet tables are available in a variety of sizes, shapes and materials. Work tables come as either 18 inch tall side tables or 23 inch tall laptop tables. Tops may be ordered in two round sizes, two square sizes, or as an oval or rectangle, and in walnut, maple or oak veneer or glacier white Corian. Accompanying coffee tables are also available.
